Lesson 34 - 20th July 2021

Lesson 34 - 20th July 2021

Continuing with the solo consolidation again today.  I was with Dave Slater today and we started by doing a few circuits.  Although it was a glorious day, it was a bit choppy and the wind was varying between runway 2 5 and runway 3 3.   My landings were not brilliant but were OK enough.

Once Dave was happy, we went back to the clubhouse and plotted out a slightly different local route.  It was similar to the previous route, but going a little bit further and going clockwise this time.  I plotted it out on SkyDemon to see if I could follow that.  I had the route on the physical map, but most people tend to use moving map technology, also called an Electronic Flight Bag (EFB) on an iPad or the like.  They are the Sat Nav of the sky.  I use SkyDemon as that is the most common one used in the UK.  I have had a look at ForeFlight but I didn't find it as logical to use.

As well as the exercise to navigate the route, another part of the exercise is the departure from the airfield and the rejoin to the airfield.

Departure

Take off as normal and follow the circuit pattern up to 1000ft on the QFE and then depart the airfield at that height until clear of the airfield.

As you depart, do the following check

F - Fuel pump off

A - Altimeter - Change from QFE to the local QNH.  The local QNH is Clench + 20, so if the Clench QFE is 1000, the QNH is 1020.

R - Radio - Make a call to Clench to advise leaving the circuit

T - Temps - Check the engine temperatures and pressures

Join

With 5NM to run, do the following:

F - Fuel pump on

A - Altimeter - Change back from the local QNH to the Clench QFE

R - Radio - Make a call to Clench to advise that you are rejoining from the West (or wherever) with 5 miles to run

T - Temps - Check the engine temperatures and pressures

You join overhead at 1500ft, to keep separation from anyone departing the circuit at 1000ft.  On the dead side descend to the circuit height of 500ft and carry on as normal, making the calls as required.

Totals

90 minutes £202.50

Total Costs = £6778.86

Total Dual = 30h 30m

Total Solo = 5h 40m

Total Hours Icarus C42 = 36h 10m
