Headset

Headset

One of the biggest single purchases you will make, other than an actual aircraft or share, will be a good quality aviation headset of your own.  It is all very well using the school/club headsets, but they are not the best of quality, they are not usually ANR (Automatic Noise Reduction), and you don't know who has been wearing them and spitting in to the microphone!

Anyway, after a lot of research, and after having tried the Bose A20's, I have taken the plunge and purchased a set of the SEHT SH10-X's.  In a previous post I mentioned about going to the LAA Rally where I was able to talk to a distributor for Bose and try on a pair of A20's.  They were OK but, for me, they weren't that comfortable.  I think it was the folding headband.

I was also able to talk to the boss of SEHT and try some of their various designs including the flagship model, the SH10-X.  These were lighter and more comfortable than the Bose A20's and fitted me a lot better.  They also sounded good in the demo mode which, in fairness, the A20's did as well, but not £200 better.  The A20's without Bluetooth are £900+ and the SH10-X's are £700.  Still a lot of money, but a good investment for the future.  They come complete with a carry case, a 5 year warranty and a 30 day no quibble return policy, so I have nothing to lose.

I will report more when they turn up and I have had chance to use them.

The other thing I have bought is a small Bluetooth receiver that will plug in to the AH10-X's to receive output from the iPad and SkyDemon.  It could be used for music, from a phone or iPad but I only want it for the navigation instructions.  This was only £10 so worth a punt.

Kneeboard

The saga of the kneeboard continues.  I have bought a 3rd set to try.  This is another Design for Pilots model and is a notepad with ring binder wallets.  I have separated the iPad out so I can have the iPad on one leg and a separate kneeboard on the other.  This seems to be the best way to manage in the cramped cockpit of the C42.
